What is a Material Handler?

Material handlers are a variety of small industrial machines that allow operators to lift and transport materials and other heavy items across a jobsite. These powerful lifting machines utilize a forked lifting mechanism attached to the front of a wheeled machine to lift items on a platform, such as a pallet. These forklifts can take a couple of different forms.

  • Straight mast forklift – A forklift with an upright vertical assembly on the front of the machine (also known as industrial forklifts). These handlers lift loads up and down to desired heights.
  • Telescopic material forklifts – A forklift with a telescopic boom assembly (also known as telehandlers). These handlers can move loads up and over obstacles.
Forklifts have been around since the late 1800s, but modern versions utilize a hydraulic-powered lift system to lift loads much higher and farther than their predecessors. A mast connected to the front of the truck frame supports the forks, while a built-in counterweight keeps the forklift steady. Some material handlers may also have pneumatic tires and other features for use on rough terrain.
